For more than 440 years, people have travelled into the forest to enjoy themselves at Bakken. What began with the discovery of a natural spring has grown into a unique danish attraction where centuries-old traditions live side by side with modern rides, entertainment, restaurants and family fun.
According to legend, in 1583 a young woman named Kirsten Piil discovered a spring in the forest north of Copenhagen. The water was believed to have healing powers, and word quickly spread.
People began travelling to the spring – not only to drink its water, but to enjoy a day in the countryside. Entertainers, performers and food vendors soon followed, and little by little, Dyrehavsbakken was born.
More than four centuries later, that entrepreneurial spirit is still at the heart of Bakken.
Unlike most modern amusement parks, all of Bakken’s rides and restaurants are run by independent business owners, traditionally known as "teltholdere". Many of these businesses are family-run, with some families having been part of Bakken for five generations.
This unique tradition helps give Bakken its distinctive character. Each ride, restaurant and attraction has its own story, personality and family history – creating a living piece of Danish cultural heritage.
And just as in 1583, entrance to Bakken is free. Visitors only pay for the rides, food and experiences they choose to enjoy.
Bakken is more than an amusement park.
It is located in Jægersborg Dyrehave, a beautiful historic landscape known for its ancient trees, open meadows and herds of free-roaming deer.
The area forms part of the par force hunting landscape in North Zealand, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Here, visitors can experience the atmosphere of the danish royal hunting grounds while exploring one of Denmark’s most distinctive cultural landscapes.
